Hand held weapon
WASP harpoon based on real world WASP knife, A gun based on shape of weapons ammunition when the bleeder blades are deployed
appearence:
A large close to mid range weapon. The main part is the launcher, which appears similar to the x-rifle/shotgun, but approximately 1.5 meters long and 40 cm in diameter with a trigger and stock at the rear of the weapon. Instead of the isolated scope it has a screen with an x-ray scanner and laser sight along the top of the weapon. It is attached to a large backpack via 3 thick cables. it is unusual for a gantz weapon in that it uses ammunition. The ammo appears as a meter long elongated broadhead, much like this, but visably longer and narrower.

the harpoon is made of the same material as the gantz sword, but is unable to be extended, it can be used as a melee weapon but is far better when launched from the launcher. Once loaded a tubed cord is attached to the base of the harpoon and is stored in a large reel within the backpack alongside a compressor that separates the nitrogen in air from other gases and compresses it to approximately 5000 psi, giving a total capacity of around 200 000 square inches of gas, and a holder for the launcher in case both hands are required for an alternate task. It is launched with a pair of lock on triggers. accelerated in a similar manner to a railgun, which gives the harpoon significant penetration ability. upon impact a pair of bleeder (folding) blades unfold to lock the harpoon in place assuming it has not blown the target apart with sheer kinetic force. once locked in the user can press a button on the launcher. when the button is pressed the compressed, nitrogen in released trough the hollow cable into the wound. the expansion of the nitrogen will create massive trauma akin to an internal explosion in the area surrounding the wound, underneath any armor assuming it penetrated. also the expansion of the gas causes an extreme drop in temperature, freezing the area around the injury. the harpoon heads can be used seperately from the launcher as melee weapons, by depressing a button on the weapon normally closed upon impact and by locking the button on the launcher, however the gas capacity is greatly limited to a smaller internal canister for the harpoon head, holding only 1000-1500 cubic inches of air.
strengths: a very effective weapon versus armored high value targets and sheer overkill against smaller targets. the accelerated harpoon head offers unparalleled armor penetration and the gas injection causes severe trauma and cold damage to the internal organs unhindered by armor. The backpack can also be ditched to increase mobility at the cost of damage and the rope retrieval method, though it also increases the overall range. the roped harpoon head can also be pulled back very quickly, causing severe damage to smaller targets though minimal damage to larger targets. when used as a melee weapon it may not extend but it can still cause lots of damage when the stored gas is released. this causes unexpected damage that can potentially be the crippling blow against regenerating targets who have to anticipate the damage they will receive in order to regenerate effectively
weaknesses: this weapon is rather heavy and cumbersome, especially when used with the backpack compressor and cable. while ditching the backpack increases maneuverability and increases the range of the weapon by removing the cable, it prevents the harpoon from being retrieved and greatly limits the damage done by the gas due to a greatly reduced volume. Also the weapon without the compressor and cable cannot refill spent harpoons. Even when the backpack is used the compressor takes approx 5-15 minutes to completely fill the gas containers. another weakness is that it is is limited to only 4 or 5 harpoon heads which are held along the side of the rifle, this means that, while powerful, it is difficult to use as a projectile against group type aliens. The cable used with the backpack has a range of approx 150 - 200 meters, though it can be risky to use against very large targets as it can result the user can be tossed around by the target, if large enough.
here is a video detailing a real world equivelant, a knife that holds 500 cubic inches of nitrogen designed as an anti shark knife. It is essentially a scaled down version of the harpoon I envision, when used as a melee weapon
