An old thing I did for school, I personified Schadenfreude - the joy that comes from the misfortune of others.
Schadenfreude, the Jester of Joyous Pain, travels across space and time for his own amusement. He takes joy in the pain of others, the child of Despair and Joy. Schadenfreude garbs his lanky body with patchwork clothing, with a tricorn hat that has three bells on each tip. When they ring out, the bellowing of millions in anguish, previous victims of his dark amusement, fills the air. The shrill screams chill most people to the bone, yet brought Schadenfreude nothing but sadistic joy. His body is scarred from some of the fights he got himself into with his many victims, but even when he was decapitated, he lifted his bleeding head and placed it back onto his neck – then sewed it back on like nothing had happened. The poor fool that decapitated him had nearly died of shock.
In the medieval era, Schadenfreude had always worn a jester's suit and hat, both were patchwork and with patches of solely black and red. With him, he brought a lute and accompanied Anger's journeys, often provoking his friend into assailing others. Schadenfreude's sadism is of unparalleled proportions, he had poked fun at the Pope's carelessness of Jerusalem until he began the call for the Crusades. On the side lines of each of the grand battles, Schadenfreude played his lute, giving a melancholic sound that seeped into the minds of each of the Crusaders, driving them to murder all in Jerusalem from the extended amount of time they spent hearing the tune.
When the medieval era came to a close and the Renaissance began, the sadistic jester provoked many people into declaring others as pagans, driving the Catholic Church into prompting the Inquisition. He stood by each execution, even if hundreds were occurring at once, his body was at each place. Almost like the pain of others fueled his very existence. For, at each one, he was laughing hysterically – he was the true definition of a sadist. He had raised the power of kings and their vassals during this time with his 'shenanigans', as Schadenfraude called his acts.
When the Renaissance ended, the Industrial Age began to kick into gear, bringing with it new innovations and ideals. Because of Schadenfreude, the royalty of the time began to plummet out of power, crashing into a horde of revolutions. The jester had been whispering into people's ears for the call to arms. He told them it was for the people, yet it was just so he could watch those he set up so high to crash into 'rock bottom'. Then, in France, the Reign of Terror had began, with Schadenfreude whispering paranoia into the mind of Robespierre. So many deaths, all for the amusement of a single individual. When the Industrial Age was booming, the jester's power was fading, and he was resorting to shoving people into their machinery. Or, he had smeared disease across the raw sewage strewn about the streets.
