Jujst so you all know this was posted in 2006! opinions may have changed since then
Now I won't lie, this game rocked my socks. It reminds me exactly how I felt when I first played Halo: CE on the X box. The gameplay and graphics drew me in, and I’m only now starting to feel a slight bit tired of it but not much. Don't get me wrong the game has flaws but Ill get on those soon.
Graphics: 10/10
This IS the best looking game I have ever played, despite not owning an HDTV. I'm not lying, I truly wish I was. I have played Half life 2 and SOTC but Gears made my mouth drop. The armour shines, things explode, bullets fly past, chainsaw blood spatters on your screen while rain pours down on the battlefield. I play gears for a bit then switch to any other game and I feel as if I’ve been robbed of visuals. I can't say anything bad about the look of the game, it really shows off the power of the 360.
Sound: 9/10
The sounds in the game are excellent. They really fit the mood, especially in the cut scenes. Mostly though you notice the enemies screams, and the variety of terrifying screams they have. The first meeting with the wretches, the Bezerker's running towards you THUMP THUMP THUMP AAAHHHH, and the Boomers well... they yell BOOM. The guns sound great and make you feel like you're living the firefight. The music fits well when the odd time you do recognize it while all the other sounds are going on. Voice acting is well done most of the time.
Gameplay: 10/10
This game does one thing very well and expect to do a lot of it if you want to live: COVER. This game has the best "behind a wall duck and cover" system I have ever played in a shooter. And if teamed up with an ally it's fun as hell. You just press A and you run forward. Once you reach a wall you are concealed and safe for the most part as long as you have your enemies keep their distance. Once behind cover you have a lot of options, aim shoot kill, blind fire if you're surrounded, run to another object, roll, or jump over. The cameras behind the back perspective, and when aiming it goes Resident Evil 4 style but with a lot more flexibility.
There’s also melee attacks like the infamous Lancer gun with the chainsaw bayonet (FUNNN!!!). You can give out squad commands but you'll mostly handle things yourself if not with a friend. INTENSE is a good way to describe this game. You fight to stay alive as more and more enemies pour at you. It never gets repetitive either, at least to me anyway. The AI is ok on casual and hardcore, but it's like they get a brain transplant on Insane difficulty, they outflank you and corner you, run when they're outmatched and find a better position. If you want a challenge, play insane. It won't disappoint but make sure you’ve beat the game on cash or hardcore at least once.
To sum up: Walk into a room, get behind cover, shoot enemies, they shoot you, reload, shoot some more, kill enemy, more coming, omg I'm being overrun, lancer chainsaw enemy, getting shot, almost dead, buddy saves your life, you both continue to dominate, more enemies coming, lots of fun ensues.
Story: 6.5/10
This is where the game sort of falls flat on it's face. There’s a story here, but when you get into the game you won't know it or understand it. You'll most likely be distracted by the game play, killing hordes of locust, and the visuals to care about the story. It's unique Ill give it that, much like Halo is. I had to go on the GOW board and check faqs to flesh out the story because I had no flippin idea what was going on.
Apparently the game takes place in the future. Humanity ran out of energy sources and started digging deeper into the earth and found a chemical known as imulsion. This energy source caused a great civil war on the planet, and after the war was ended the monster race known as the locust attacked on what was known as E day. The Imulsion belonged to the locust and they hated the humans for digging into their home and stealing their stuff... on E day the main character Marcus Fenix got a call from his father that he was being attacked at home or something, Fenix abandoned his post to help his father. He was punished for this and was sentenced to prison for 14 years I think. Then the Locust horde eventually overran the prison...
^^ that’s all on the top of my head, there’s more to the story, check faqs if you're interested. It's also confirmed that GOW is the first part in a trilogy, so that is most likely the reason for the half assed story so ill forgive it only for that reason.
Overall: 8.5/10 And I'm not good at math, so that's what I'm giving it!
This game really is a console seller. Many will bitch about the story but I tolerate it. I don't feel bad about owning a 360, infact I'm slowly converting to a slight 360 fanboy. This game is awesome, if you have a 360 and two controllers it's a must buy even without online.
