another DnS review I posted a while back.
Street Fighter Alpha 3 MAX is a port of the original Alpha 3 from the PS1 to the PSP. New characters were added, new gameplay modes were added, and all the graphics and Street Fighter fun have been left intact.
Ill start off by saying that this is a great PSP game. When I first heard about it I was imediatelly psyched about how the PSP would handle the dazzling graphics of Alpha 3 and keep the Arcade feel or atleast keep the PS1 nostalgia. Lets say that I wasnt dissapointed though id prefer it would have been 3rd Strike, but you can't win them all
Also to note: there are basically no Load times in this game except the initial one at the beggining right after you insert the game. So all you PSP owners used to insanely long load times have no complaints here, you never wait more than a second before jumping straight into the action.
Story/Charecters: 8
Didn't I say they added new charecters? Apart from the regulars, the n00bs you get use are Eagle, Maki, Yun and Ingrid. Yun gets special praise for having his charecter model from Capcom VS SNK 2, not many would notice but my eyes grew big and round when I first saw him. You get 38 to play with off the bat and 4 to unlock which gives this game lots of replay value.
Every time you choose a charecter in arcade mode theres an intoductory to who he/she is and what his/her goals are in the game. Charecters even have little skits before a battle and converse with one another. Like Evil Ryu and Akuma which you would expect in the Street Fighter series to have a climactic showdown, in this the story makes good use of the long time known hatred and rivalry. Each charecter has its own specific ending, and you'll find yourself trying to beat the game with everyone just to see each one.
Graphics: 9
The graphics and this game are excellent and you can tell they got a decent upgrade from the PS1 version. M. Bisons Psycho Crusher Super combo is still a glorious feast for the eyes as it was before and Akuma almost makes you cry to look at his special techniques in practice. All the backrounds fit the fighting mood well and are very interactive and theres some movement to be seen in them. The menu screens move around alot and have lots of sass to get you pumped up before a match. I really like how Capcom improved the look of the game here.
Sound: 8
The sounds are taken exactly the same from what they were before. This is by no means a bad thing. The sounds are as great now as they were then, and i find no complaints here. The music ingame drives you in and the boss battle music is even better. It captures the sound of attacks hitting and rain falling very nicely. The menu sounds are good too, and the music right after the announcer says "select your charecter" is at a very good pace and the announcer isnt as annoying as they would be in other fighting games.
Controls: 6
Ah now here is were i can finnally say something bad about the game. As you know control is one of the most important apects of a fighting game, it doesnt make or break the game a whole lot but certainly comes close. What you use to move and direct your fighter is the either Directional pad, or the Anolog/nub. What really sucks and why i give this catagory a 6 is that the direction pad is very bad at recognizing corner commands. Like up-right or up-left or down-right and down-left etc, and that makes it very hard to pull off Special moves and Super moves on the fly. The Anolog isnt bad but it isnt as perfect as the Dual-shock on the PS and PS2 were. I can still play and excell at this game with the Analog but Fighting game newbies will have a very tough time getting used to it.
Gameplay: 8
The gameplay in this game is very good and you get a whole variety of modes to play in too. Ill list a few: Arcade mode (ofcourse) the standard for all fighting games. World Tour mode where you can fight all over the globe and level up your charecter. Variable Battle is just as Arcade mode but you can substitute/swap characters in the heat of battle. Dramatic battle where you and a computer controlled parter take on another for a 2 on 1 battle and Reverse Dramatic battle where just as the name implies, you take on two computer controlled opponants at the same time! And Final Battle for lazy people who want a Boss fight right away.
The difficulty can be changed from 1-8 stars and you can set up how hard you want the game to be. I can fight on 6 stars naturally but put 7 or more and im getting my Ass kicked. You have differant speeds you can adjust the game to aswell, two of them are Turbo 1 and 2. You really must have good eyes and fast reflexes to be really good at this game, but if your smart and know your charecter even a slow player can win. Once you get the hang of how to fight though, the game gets much more enjoyable and you'll soon find a charecter you like best.
Overall: 7.5 out of 10
This is a very fun and great PSP game. Among other fighting games out there on the system it really riens supreme. And really, against Darkstalkers and banned no homo budokai its a saint. I reccomend any PSP owner to go out and buy this game for a good fast and easy Street fighter experiance. For a fighting game fan its a Must have.
