I can't decide what to watch. Maybe you can help? I'm interested in anime with action, drama and a dark theme. Sometimes I'm willing to hop to other animes outside those generes if the anime is good enough, but I try to stick to what I'm accustomed to. However, I hate mainstream anime such as Bleach, Naruto and Inuyasha, so please don't include those in your suggestions.
Here's what I've watched so far...
Air Air Gear Beck: Mongolian Chop Squad Series Black Cat Darker Than Black Death Note Disgaea DNA² Flame of Recca Chobits Comic Party Full Metal Panic! Fumoffu Excel Saga E's Otherwise Some of Detective Conan/Case Closed Elfen Lied Eureka 7 Ghost Hound Getbackers Ghost Hunt Ghost Stories Gravion Great Teacher Onizuka Hellsing Higurashi Series (Waiting on 3rd season) Initial D Jigoku Shoujo Hell Girl Series (Waiting on 3rd Season) Jing: King of Bandits Kimi Ga Nozomu Eien/Rumbling Hearts Kino's Journey Maburaho Melancholy Of Suzumiya Haruhi Midori No Hibi Neon Genesis Evangelion Nightwalker Ninja Scroll Orphen Outlaw Star Paradise Kiss Pretear RahXephon (May need to watch it again tho...) Rune Soldier School Days Shakugan no Shana Tenjho Tenge Those Who Hunt Elves Tide-Line Blue Tsubasa Chronicle Cardcaptor Sakura Welcome to the NHK .HACK Series Golden Boy Gantz Spirited Away To Aru Majutsu no Index Series
...and that's about it.
So help me out, please?

Code Geass?
It has drama, and has some dark themes and/or happenings. Action picks up around the second season, however. It's kinda like Death Note.
Still, I think by now Code Geass and Death Note have become pretty mainstream.
Oh, here's a good anime for you to watch:
Basilisk.
It's about Ninjas, has a really dark theme (people die left and right), and has action.
What about Akira? And did you watch the Ninja Scroll animated movie or TV show?

I saw Akira, it was good but the ending was terrible. I heard the manga was better, but as of now I only read Gantz manga.
As for Ninja Scroll, I saw the movie, but didn't know there was an animated series. I rate it about average though, there were some good parts here and there, but nothing that made me fall in love with it.
I'm definately going to check out Code Geass though, everyone keeps pitching that anime to me, wondering why it isn't on my list. And while I'm at it I'll check out Basilisk too, since that isn't the 1st time I've heard it suggested. I'm not a big ninja fan, but I could never pass up the chance to see people die left and right.

Yeah, I don't think the T.V. series of Ninja Scroll is worth checking out. But at the same time, I fell in love with the movie when I first saw it.
As for the rest, happy watching!

I read manga more than I watch anime. So I'm not really the one to give out suggestions.
Soul eater, though it's kinda mainstream but not. Needless is another but it's not as dark as the manga.
I don't know. I tried thinking of others but you already had them on your list. Afro Samurai, and Karas are what I have for sure.

Here's an update. Code Geass has become my favorite anime, and I'm sort of ashamed that I've neglected to watch it up until now. If you haven't watched it yet, you need to! I also hear that a 3rd season is in development, so I plan on checking that out as well! Thanks Fayrra! Code Geass aside, I moved onto watching Umineko No Naku Koroni and Baccano! Umineko was meh, but it had its enjoyable moments as well as a refreshing amount of gore, but the story was very complicated and was left incomplete. Baccano! was very good as well and despite being short, it was very entertaining and I found myself growing attached to many of the main characters. So I'd give Code Geass and Baccano an A+, and Umineko No Naku Koroni a C-. "On to the next one..."

It's actually my favorite anime, too. ^_^ As for the third season, I heard it's actually like some kind of alternate timeline thing. But I'm not too sure so don't take my word for it. Baccano! was very good as well and despite being short, it was very entertaining and I found myself growing attached to many of the main characters. I'll add this to my list, then.

YOU WATCHED UMINEKO!? Shame you didn't like it. Also I noticed you were waiting on the 3rd season of Higurashi. It's been out for a while >.> Welp I try to be fair when I rate anime and even though I loved the mystery and the way certain individuals were killed in Umineko, I can't rate an anime on that and gore alone. The show was very confusing and ended on a very confusing note as well. I couldn't understand how the series allowed Battler to be ignorant of magic if he himself were pulled into a gaming area where magic was performed all around him. In my opinion it didn't matter if his family was killed with magic, the fact that it was used in the gaming area proved its existence enough. I mean, if I see people appearing and disapearing, along with red and blue text, I'd have to be a dumbass not to acknowledge the fact that perhaps magic is possible. I also never understood other things like how Battler's sister was able to control Beatrice's furniture, how Battler got out of being Beatrice's slave and what Beatrice meant at the end of the series. I'm sure some might have the answers to these questions, but I don't, and I'm sure other people who didn't read the novel were just as confused as me. That's why I gave it that rating. Anyways, I'll check out the 3rd Season of Higurashi!
