Anyone that's seen the Akira anime is only getting half the story. I recently finished reading the manga (it was happening at the same time, so the anime only used parts from the first half, then the ultimate ending with baby/blog Testsuo), and it was amazing. Halfway through the story, Akira awakens and Japan becomes the fucking Road Warrior. Though, the ending of the story is the same, but almost everything leading up to it is different and way more awesome.
Then, another manga by the same author (which, I think I heard was the inspiration for Akira) is Domu: A Child's Dream. It's about this apartment complex where people mysteriously die or kill themselves. As it turns out, an old man is using psychic powers to make them die so he can take a trinket or toy that they have. That all changes when a little girl with powers shows up. It's not very long, but they have a pretty epic psychic showdown and the little girl fucking rips a couple cops in half with her mind.
I highly recommend both. Now.
